Fred Mills (BSc Architectural Engineering and Design Management 2008) has been named an Honorary Fellow for his outstanding contribution to the public understanding of construction and engineering by The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

This honour is awarded by the IET to a select number of individuals who have devoted considerable time and effort to improving the construction industry.

The IET has awarded Fred for championing excellence within architecture, engineering and construction with his YouTube site The B1M.  The award acknowledges the global impact of the company’s communication channels.  The B1M enlightens workers within the industry and inspires young audiences to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Fred Mills said: “This is a deeply humbling honour. From a young age I have followed my love and passion for this industry, often in the face of adversity as I strived to build something that hadn’t been done before.”

Since launching in 2012, The B1M has attracted a global audience, now achieving more than twenty million views each month.  It uses compelling videos of real-life projects from across the world as education tools.

By identifying the value of visual learning, Fred created a platform that has made the most of growing internet audiences.  According to The B1M website, this is now the most viewed channel for construction in the world.  In 2020 it reached one million subscribers on YouTube.

Fred’s other achievements include an award in 2016 from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

Congratulations to Fred on achieving recognition for his hard work and dedication.
