Chaz spent some time feeling creatively uninspired and so challenged themself to draw or paint a self-portrait every day for a month. The challenge began on 1 January 2021. This then extended to three months, six months and finally became a daily practice, with hundreds of pieces created over those years.
730 Daily Self Portraits is an exhibition of the first two years of this ongoing project. It is a series of self portrait drawings and paintings.
When asked about the exhibition, Chaz said:
I started my daily self portrait project almost four years ago, so I'm very excited to finally see so many of them hung up together. It feels quite vulnerable to be sharing these publicly, as they're almost like diary entries from each day of my life. I think the exhibition is a monument to what can be achieved by doing one thing each day; I love making art every day and I hope the exhibition inspires people to think about what they love doing and how they could incorporate it into their daily life.
The exhibition is on at Surface Gallery, Nottingham from Saturday 30 November to Saturday 14 December. There will also be an opening event on Friday 29 November from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Both events are free and open to all.
Chaz Howkins graduated with a degree Fine Art in 2018.
