About the course
Music is a language. You can think of music theory as the ‘reading and writing’ whereas musicianship is the ‘speaking and listening’. Musicianship is all about developing the essential skills that make music feel natural, such as understanding rhythm, harmony and expression.
This six-week course will cultivate practical, intuitive skills that bring your music to life, beyond the technicalities of mastering an instrument. They help you connect with music on a deeper level, training you to identify what you're hearing and respond to it instinctively.
Who are the lessons for?
Musicians of any ability level who sing or play an instrument. We also welcome musicians who make music electronically (e.g. DJs, music producers, etc). Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced musician, these lessons can be tailored to your preferences and abilities.
This course is open to Loughborough University students and staff and members of the University Choir.
What should I expect?
The lessons will be approximately 50% practical (musicianship), and 50% written (theory). The two different types of learning are tailored to work together. Lessons will be taught in small groups of approx 6-8, allowing you to practise collaborative skills and to learn from other students, as well as the teacher.
Each week you will be set practical and written activities to develop your skills. You’ll need to allow around an hour each week to do these in preparation for the following week. As part of the course, you will have the option to work towards graded Music Theory exams if you wish to.
About the teacher
Alex Bowen teaches piano, theory, and musicianship from beginner to advanced levels. She trained with the Dalcroze Society for five years, becoming a qualified Dalcroze Eurhythmics teacher, and has since taught both Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Kodály musicianship methods at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Alex is a sensitive, experienced teacher who offers fun and challenging lessons, adapting to the needs of students. Her lessons encourage creativity and authenticity, building confidence and a deep connection to the music.
When and where?
We know life is busy, so we want to find the best time for everyone! If you're interested in this course, then please register your interest via our online form using the 'Book now' button. Our tutor will then contact you to check your availability and work out the best day and time for the class.
The first class will start during week commencing 28 October and continue for six consecutive weeks.
Once the dates and times have been agreed we will confirm the location for the class. It will be on campus.
