Join staff from Pilkington Library for the University Book Club’s discussion of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café by Fanny Flagg.

Centred on the friendship between a middle-aged housewife and an elderly woman, the novel explores family, aging, lesbianism and racism. It was adapted into the feature film Fried Green Tomatoes in 1999

This book was chosen as part of Bookflix, which celebrates book available in the Library that have been made into films. There will be a Bookflix display available in the Library from 13-24 April. 

All are welcome — whether you’ve read the whole book, part of it, or just want to listen in. Bring your lunch, your thoughts, and your curiosity!

Access to the book

The Library has a subscription to Libby, the leisure reading app widely used by public libraries. Libby enables the Library to support the wellbeing of all its users by providing access to leisure reading, wellbeing, and audiobook titles. Content includes ebooks, emagazines, and much more. To get started, simply download the Libby app and sign in. The app can be downloaded from the app store, or from a link on the Libby homepage.  

Through Libby, the Library have purchased anebook of Greta and Valdin, though, unfortunately due to licensing restrictions, it’s one-user at a time only. As this is the case, an audiobook copy has also been purchased and this has unlimited access.   

About the Book Club

The University Book Club is run by staff from Pilkington Library and is open to all current and former students and staff of Loughborough University. It meets in person in the Library but the meetings can also be accessed remotely via Teams.
