Profile

I am a Professor of Construction Management and Engineering with a background in contracting, engineering and consultancy. I have over 30 years of research and industrial experience in the built environment.

My career started in contracting as an engineer and project manager before I moved to academia. Throughout my time in academia, I have maintained strong industry links through consultancy and research. Work undertaken during my career has been varied but remains focused on the delivery of high-performing projects.

I am the founding Chair of the International Conference for Sustainable Ecological Engineering Design for Society (SEEDS), Chair of the Research Innovation Sustainability and Enterprise (RISE) Awards, Past Chair of the Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM), a founding Member of the Building Performance Network, and Chair of the CIOB Sustainability Panel.

I recently served on the 2021–2022 (UKRI) Research Excellence Framework 2021 exercise for Sub-Panel 13. I am Visiting Professor of Lean Construction CUT South Africa and Visiting Professor of Construction and Project Management at the University of Suffolk.

I have been the principal investigator working on national and major international research programmes, and was the sub-task leader for International Energy Agency Annex 68 and 71 – characterising building performance and in-use measurement of buildings.

My exposure to such research has allowed me to write and co-author over 100 publications on sustainability, construction technology, refurbishment, and construction management. Much of my work now has a strong focus on renewable and zero-carbon energy.

I have a passion for upholding professionalism and creating robust and resilient teams. To deliver high-performing world-class projects there is a need to draw expertise from the breadth of society. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are a the heart of my work and what it means to create sustainable and healthy environments.
