The Diploma in Industrial Studies

Our placement scheme leads to the award of the Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS) on successful completion of the student placement.

To earn the DIS upon graduation, students must complete:

45 weeks of work

A minimum of 45 weeks with flexibility on a case-by-case basis. 

Progress reports

A series of 4 reports about the placement experience throughout the year. This should be done approximately every 3 months from the beginning of the placement year. The line manager is welcome to add any comments and will need to sign off each report.

Poster presentation

A poster presentation to first- and second-year students providing information and reflection on the industry placement experience upon returning to University. Students will need to obtain sign-off from their company before presenting.

Competent performance

Perform job duties competently during the placement, uphold good conduct and maintain the reputation and standards of both the company and the University.

Student responsibilities

  • Students are responsible for ensuring a suitable professional experience, maintaining effective communication with the University, and meeting the requirements for the DIS/DPS award.
  • DIS/DPS assessments should be completed outside of working hours.
  • Students can access all relevant information necessary for the successful completion of their placement year and the DIS/DPS award on LEARN, the University's virtual learning environment (VLE). Please refer to this resource if needed.
