What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of this study is to gain information relating to why a person ends up as a Data Scientist.  The study aims to explore your influences and career choices, and what your school experience was like.

Who is doing this research and why?

This study is part of a student research project supported by Loughborough University. The study will be undertaken by Tanya Gleadow and supervised by Dr Colin Foster and Dr Ian Jones.

Are there any inclusion or exclusion criteria?

You must be over the age of 18 and have the capacity to fully understand and consent to this research. You must also work in a data science based career and have been educated at school in the UK.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey, which should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. You do not need to do anything before completing the survey. This is a low risk activity and no disadvantages or risks have been identified in association with participating.

Is there any associated cost with this experiment?

There is no cost associated with this experiment.

Once I take part, can I change my mind?

After you have read this information and asked any questions you may have, if you are happy to participate, please read the consent page and confirm your consent by checking the tick box at the bottom of the page. You can withdraw from the survey at any time by closing the browser. However, as the survey is anonymous once you have submitted the survey it will not be possible to withdraw your data from the study.

What are the possible benefits of participating?

You will be given the opportunity to open a second survey if you wish to leave your email for purposes of a prize draw for all participants who choose to enter. The email collection will not be linked to your original survey and will only be used for the purposes of sending you a prize should you win the draw. It will be deleted once prizes have been distributed.

Are there any disadvantages or risks in participating?

This is a low risk activity and no disadvantages or risks have been identified in association with participating.

Data Protection Privacy Notice

Loughborough University will be using information/data from you in order to undertake this study and will act as the data controller for this study. This means that the University is responsible for looking after your information and using it properly.

What personal information will be collected from me and how will it be used?

No identifiable personal information will be collected and so your participation in the study will be confidential.

How will the anonymised data/results collected from me be used?

The anonymous data will be used in a student thesis and potentially in a publication. No individual will be identifiable in any report, presentation, or publication. 

How long will the anonymised data/results be retained?

Anonymised data will be retained until the final project marks have been verified, expected March 2025.
