Biography

Joel was born in West Yorkshire and completed his Bachelor's Degree in Physics in 2019. After a short time in ministry with his church and a period in the financial services sector, Joel moved into medical physics working with a company that performs Quality Assurance assessments on Diagnostic Ultrasound Machines as well as research into testing this equipment. After this chapter ended, Joel joined the Applied Radiation and Medical Physics group as a PhD student in January 2024 working under Dr Sarah Bugby.

Research

Joel's research focuses on the imaging technique known as X-ray backscatter, where X-rays that have been Compton scattered backward off of material are imaged and used to characterise material within vessels. The goal is to apply this research to decommissioning legacy nuclear assets.
