Loughborough student sets up coronavirus support group to help the local community

Craig Brown, an International Business student at Loughborough, has founded the Students Against Corona group to organise volunteers to support the local community.

Initially, Craig set up the group to act as an intermediary between those who required assistance and volunteers. However, the movement has grown in a very short space of time with local businesses and charities coming on board to ensure resources are available.

#AgainstCorona is now established in nine countries, and in Loughborough, they have partnered with the NHS, Charnwood Borough Council, John Storer House and the Royal College of GPs.

The group are currently distributing leaflets to every household in Loughborough with information about what they do, how people can volunteer, and how they can ask for assistance. They ensure all parties are safe using social distancing measures and cashless transactions where necessary.

Craig said: “If we can do even the smallest thing to make people’s lives easier during this time, I think we can look back on this situation in years to come with pride in the fact that we tried to do the right thing.”

The local council have deemed the tasks they are carrying out as ‘necessary work’ so they are able to continue helping the community during lockdown.

More details are available on the Students Against Corona website.
