Student attends Royal Foundation mental health forum

School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SSEHS) student India Blakemore was invited to ‘Exploring our Emotional Worlds: A Forum for Young People’, hosted by The Royal Foundation and The Mix for World Mental Health Day (10 October).

Held in Birmingham, the forum was attended by 100 young people from across the UK for an important conversation about how they manage their emotions and how they can be supported to build their resilience, including contributions from Dr Alex Georgea UK ambassador for mental health, and The Prince and Princess of Wales.

The forum featured a range of interactive workshops and activities with special guests, including a group activity challenge on managing your emotions and a discussion panel hosted by Katie Thistleton, with journalist and climate activist, Scarlett Westbrook and Yale professor, Marc Brackett. Attendees discussed the action they would like to undertake after identifying areas they believed needed working on within their communities.

The Prince and Princess of Wales joined the group for the last workshop and they both spoke about mental health, including the importance of being able to talk to one another about how we feel. Prince William also shared what is in his ‘emotional wellbeing toolkit’.

On attending the event, India commented: I was honoured to be in a room full of otherwho have similar aspirations for the mental health of young people given the struggles we face today. I felt privileged to be able to speak to Dr Alex George and share my thoughts on the mental health of young people and how I believe we could tackle some of these problems.
