Reimagining RIO: A programme to transform the Research and Innovation Office

To support delivery of the Research and Innovation Core Plan, Loughborough University has implemented the ‘Reimagining RIO’ transformation programme. This initiative aims to significantly boost the ability of the Research and Innovation Office (RIO) to support research and innovation activities, amplify the value the team delivers, and thereby accelerate our research efforts.

The programme consists of five continuous improvement projects which aim to increase capacity, develop skills, improve internal procedures, enhance the service offered and develop the culture within the directorate as well as one strategic project called ‘Processes and Systems’ which is focused on improving how research grants are managed.

Processes and Systems: Implementing Worktribe to support research grant management

The Processes and Systems project is designed to enhance the pre-award and post-award experience for our colleagues by streamlining the processes and systems used for managing research and innovation projects.

After a thorough evaluation, we have chosen the Worktribe Pre-Award, Contracts, and Post-Award products as our new system solution to support these improved processes. Worktribe is highly recommended across the sector and provides a comprehensive suite of tools for seamless, end-to-end research and innovation management.

Given the scale of this transformation, we will phase in the new processes and systems over the next 12 months. Here are the estimated timelines for the rollout:

  • August 2024: Rollout of Worktribe Pre-Award functionality to RIO staff and School approvers, replacing the RX2 approval process.
  • End of 2024: Extension of Worktribe Pre-Award functionality to academic colleagues.
  • Early 2025: Introduction of Worktribe Contracts functionality.
  • Summer 2025: Implementation of Worktribe Post-Award functionality.
