Students: Don’t forget to register to vote for the General Election

To be able to take part in the General Election, you must be registered to vote.

This can be done by visiting the Gov.UK website and adding yourself to the electoral register. You can do this online and it will usually only take a few minutes. You can contact your local Electoral Registration Office to find out if you’re already registered to vote.

On Thursday 13 June, representatives of Charnwood Borough Council will be available in the Students’ Union from 11am-2pm to answer questions you might have, as well as signposting to the register to vote website and where you can get further information about voting.

Where can I vote?

Students can be registered to vote at both their term time and home address; however, you can only vote once at a General Election. Therefore, if you want to vote at your university term-time address, you need to make sure that you are correctly registered to do so. Likewise, if you would prefer to vote at your home address, please visit the website for further information on how you can do so.  Please consider where you are most likely to be residing in the build-up to and on polling day (4 July 2024).

Depending on where you are living at the time of an election – for example, if you are at your home address and want to vote in Loughborough – you may want to vote by post. If you do want to vote by post, you will need to apply for a postal vote before 19 June. The same will apply if you are in Loughborough but want your vote to be registered at your home address.

If you change your address you will need to update your details and register again. Address changes are common for students, so, if you want to remain eligible to vote, you will need to visit the above site each time that you move and update your details on the register.

What’s the deadline to register to vote?

The deadline to register to vote in the General Election is 11.59pm on Tuesday 18 June. The deadline for receiving new postal vote applications (or changes to existing postal votes) is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June.

Who can register to vote?

To register to vote, you must be:

  • Aged 16 or over (aged 18 to vote)
  • A UK or Irish citizen
  • A qualifying citizen living in the UK
  • A qualifying EU citizen living in the UK
