New information security training launches

The new mandatory information security training, in partnership with KnowBe4, is now live. KnowBe4 is the world’s largest provider of security awareness training and offers bite-sized modules and interactive content.

This initiative highlights the importance of responsible data handling, and the need for vigilance against cyber threats that aim to disrupt academic institutions, steal intellectual property and commit fraud.

What’s new?

The new KnowBe4 training offers regularly updated modules that increase real-world data handling and cyber security awareness, applicable both professionally and personally. Additionally, the University will offer a variety of resources to appeal to a range of learning styles.

Why does it matter?

Faced with persistent cyber threats to UK universities, robust cyber defences are vital. We are all responsible for protecting our community.

What do I need to do?

If you are a staff member and have not completed the information security training within the past 22 months, or if you’re new to the University, you’ll receive an email from OD@lboro.ac.uk asking you to take the training. The email will provide you with a direct link to the KnowBe4 platform, but if you prefer you can navigate to KnowBe4 via the Learn module where the previous training was delivered.

You are required to complete six modules, covering a range of topics that will provide you with baseline knowledge and understanding of cyber security and data protection:

  • Security Snapshots - "Working Remotely" (Public Wi-Fi)
  • Phishing Foundations
  • The Inside Man: Season 1 Ep 01 - The New Guy (Social Engineering)
  • Putting Data Protection into Practice
  • Security Snapshots - “Creature of Habit” (Password Reuse)
  • Security Culture Survey (SCS)

Please note that the mandatory training package will take approximately one hour to complete. There will also be optional modules available if you want to continue learning, but they do not form part of the University’s mandatory training.

The project team is working closely with the Doctoral College on the roll-out of mandatory information security training to doctoral researchers who are registering this July and October. Mandatory training for existing doctoral researchers will be rolled out later this year.  In the meantime, doctoral researchers are encouraged to engage with the optional training modules on KnowBe4.
