We are pleased to launch the Black History Month 2024 event programme. Staff and students can find more information about Black History Month on our micro-site. The site also features news and highlights of race equity work being carried out at the University, and resources to support staff and students with understanding and embedding anti-racism on campus.
On 2 October, The University Book Club are celebrating Black History Month by diving into Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo. Explore the interwoven lives of 12 characters across generations and social backgrounds in this powerful and beautifully written book.
Library staff have carefully curated a display of books, digital resources and archives around Black History Month, which will be displayed throughout the month of October at the Pilkington Library. You can also find more digital resources on the Race Equity Reading List and the Black History Month Watch List.
Dr Marcus Collins, reader in Contemporary History at Loughborough University, is hosting two events for Black History Month. On 7 October, Dr Collin’s webinar ‘I am not prejudiced, but…’ , will present new research which explores contemporary understandings of prejudice, discrimination, immigration and national identity and the portrayal of ‘race’ relations in post-war Britain. On 16 October, Dr Collins hosts a discussion around 'Has Britain a Colour Bar', the first British television programme about ‘race’ relations, broadcast in 1955. Dr Collins explores how and why the documentary was made and the impact it had on race relations in 1950’s Britain.
On 11 October, join us for the Legacy and Leadership Forum: Reclaiming the Narrative, an empowering event hosted by Black Excellence UK in collaboration with Loughborough University Business School. Hear from influential Black leaders who are reshaping their fields and reclaiming narratives, gain valuable insights about practical strategies for leadership and connect with like-minded professionals to expand your network.
We close the month with our Black History Month March on 30 October. There will be opening words from staff and student Race Equity leads, then join us on a walk around campus. This is an opportunity to meet, talk and walk with your colleagues and reflect on our activities over the last month.
