Success at the DigiLabs Summer Showcase

The DigiLabs team hosted their first DigiLabs Summer Showcase event for academic and professional services colleagues across the campus on 3 September.

The event was designed to inform, educate and engage staff in a showcase of the work completed over the summer by a group of DigiLabs summer interns. The student internships were funded through the Teaching Innovation Awards with the aim of developing content to support teaching and learning across new technologies that have been introduced as part of the DigiLabs project.

Colleagues received 5 x 15-minute presentations from each of our DigiLabs interns (with the support of the lead academics) in the following areas:

  • 3D Visualisation of Landscapes (Fayzan Kashem and Dr Tom Djikstra)
  • 3D Visualization of Engineering and Scientific Structures (Jiaqi Wang and Prof. Steven Kenny)
  • Digiflow: enhancing fluid mechanics learning by digital visualisation technologies (Aidan Quinn and Dr Bjorn Cleton)
  • Developing DigiLabs in the Bio-curriculum; SimBioLab (Millie Cooper and Dr Elizabeth Ratcliffe)
  • DigiLabs Virtual Anatomy (Emily Barefoot and John Warren)

After each presentation, colleagues had a chance to ask further questions. This was followed by an opportunity to network and share ideas and best practice over light refreshments.

Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Rachel Thomson who is the DigiLabs Project Sponsor commented: “I was really impressed with everything that our student interns have achieved over the summer, and it was great to see their enthusiasm for the new technologies and how they will be used in our teaching delivery moving forwards to support our academic experience. Many thanks also to the staff who have supported the interns through their Teaching Innovation Awards.”

Student Summer Intern Aidan Quinn said: “The Digilabs showcase was an incredible experience, I was very thankful for the opportunity to showcase the exciting work I have completed so far and to gain an insight into the work of my peers.”
