Your guide to the Windows 11 upgrade

From November, IT Services will roll out the latest Microsoft Operating System, Windows 11 to devices on the staff-managed desktop service.

The new OS offers the latest features, security, and functionality to support collaborations, teaching and learning.

Preparing your device for the upgrade

Organise, check and back up your data.

Do you keep files and folders on your device's desktop? Do you have sites that you have Bookmarked or saved as Favourites? If the answer is yes, please follow our ‘Prep Guide’.

The upgrade is a 'wipe' and 'install' process, therefore you must backup your data. This must be done before the upgrade.

About the upgrade

How will the upgrade be implemented?

  • Upgrading to Windows 11 will require all users to visit the in-person upgrade clinic on campus.

How will my device be upgraded to Windows 11?

  • The upgrade process will provide you with a replacement device of the same model, this is referred to as a “Hot Swap”. You can request the return of your existing device if you have a sufficient business reason.

How long does the upgrade take?

  • A “Hot Swap” will take no more than 30 minutes, for those looking to retain their device, expect to be without the device for 24 hours.

How do I book in for the upgrade?

  • Appointments for November onwards will be available shortly. Appointments will be facilitated via a Microsoft booking form.
  • Users who have been identified with the standard managed desktop build, with non-specialist software installed (eg software only from the Software Centre) will be the first to be invited to upgrade to Windows 11. This will be between November and January.
  • However, if you want to get ahead of the queue, we'll be offering an early access upgrade in October for one week only. Appointments are available from Tuesday 15 October to Friday 18 October. Please see Book my W11 Upgrade.

Returning old or unused laptops

IT Services are asking all staff to return any old or unused laptops. Any secondary laptop devices that are no longer in active use also need to be returned. These devices will be integral to the project, allowing IT Services to test and implement the new operating system (OS) upgrade efficiently as well as saving money.

If you have any such devices, please arrange to return them by contacting the IT Service Desk.
