Returning students: Check out Housing Hand’s rent guarantor scheme

If you’re looking for off-campus accommodation for your future studies, some landlords may require a UK-based rent guarantor, while others may not. If you’re unable to provide a personal UK guarantor, Loughborough University has partnered with Housing Hand, who offer a discounted service to support students in securing accommodation.

A rent guarantor is someone who agrees to take legal responsibility for the rent if you’re unable to make a rent payment. Having a rent guarantor in the UK is a reliable and widely accepted way to increase your options when renting in Loughborough, as many private landlords and letting agents ask for students to have one.

If you don’t have access to a UK-based guarantor, our Student Accommodation team have partnered with guarantor provider Housing Hand to support you in your accommodation search. You can access their service at a reduced rate following a successful application.

Housing Hand can act as a UK guarantor for a fee calculated according to your rent amount. By using this service, you can expect the fee to be equal to around 5.5% of your rent payments, compared to ~10.5% without the discount.

For your application, you will need:

  • Proof of study – Loughborough University confirmation email, UCAS offer or your Student ID Card
  • Proof of identity – a valid passport, driving license or national ID card
  • Co-signer details – someone Housing Hand can contact if they cannot reach you directly

If you do not have access to a co-signer, for example if you are care-experienced or estranged, Housing Hand offers a dedicated application route where you will not be asked to provide a co-signer as part of your application.

If you’re still looking for accommodation, you can look for available University-approved property options on Loughborough Studentpad.

Once you have found a property, you can book an appointment with the Student Advice and Support Service for a contract check to help you decide if it is suitable and to review any potentially unfair terms.
