Capacity

This project involved the recruitment of RIO staff to increase capacity. In addition, it will embed new processes to support the recruitment and induction of staff joining the RIO Team and introduce training for those moving into new roles in the department.

Project aim

To deliver a step change in the way we recruit, induct, train and retain colleagues - positioning the team to proactively support delivery of the aims outlined in the Research and Innovation Core Plan.

Scope and workstreams

This project will:

  • Introduce a comprehensive recruitment and induction programme
  • Identify staff retention factors
  • Identify short-term skills gaps and deliver a staff development programme
  • Identify and resolve backlogs of work

Timeline

We aim to complete this project by the end of 2024.

Progress

Processes for recruitment and induction have been reviewed and process flows linked to HR systems developed.

A successful series of Lunch and learn sessions provided training on VAT and MS Teams / 365.

Induction packs for on-boarding new staff have been introduced and a sample of job descriptions reviewed to assess EDI and skills requirements.

The RIO Behaviours Framework has been reviewed and staff are encouraged to demonstrate these behaviours to help build trust and confidence in the service we provide.

Our next steps are to:

  • Create a blueprint for recruitment, induction and training for line managers
  • Further develop the programme of Lunch and learn sessions to address short-term skills gaps
  • Make recommendations for updates to all RIO job descriptions
