Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) Visiting Fellow Professor Masashi Yamakawa delivers a seminar on their research as part a week of activities under the IAS Theme 'Breathe'.
This research utilises numerical computation to investigate the transmission of droplets containing the novel coronavirus. We have introduced a computational method that explores the interaction between virus transmission and the encapsulating droplets, considering the droplets' influence on their own physical behaviour. These findings were initially presented shortly after the onset of the pandemic in 2020, providing essential insights for effective infection prevention strategies.
The study specifically focuses on the impact of masks, optimising ventilation in vehicles, and other pertinent factors. Additionally, simulations were conducted to comprehend the mechanisms of infection in diverse indoor environments. The presentation incorporates quantitative calculations, elucidating changes in the probability of infection based on different speech scenarios. Notably, these calculations were performed using Fugaku, the world's fastest supercomputer. As the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic diminishes, the knowledge acquired from this research will contribute to better preparedness for future outbreaks of novel viruses.
