Being LGBT+ is a conversation topic I’ve usually shied away from. I’ve never felt like it defined me and at first I struggled to see how I fit amongst unreflective pop culture stereotypes. At Loughborough however, I quickly realised that diversity is the fundamental basis of any LGBT+ community.

While I still at times find my identity difficult to talk about with others, I have come to express it in different ways. Being involved in the LGBT+ association at Loughborough has allowed me to give back to the student community whilst informing others around me. My younger self might have asked why such an expression is necessary. My response would be that stepping through a metaphorical minefield is an exhausting way to live. In 2019, we deserve to be able to speak freely with those around us without worrying where we place each foot.
