Loughborough University and the British Heart Foundation partner for Valentine’s Day event that aims to increase cardiac arrest survival rates
Loughborough University, Loughborough Students’ Union and the British Heart Foundation are joining forces on the most heart-themed day of the year to try and increase cardiac arrest survival rates.
More than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests take place in the UK each year yet less than 1 in 10 people survive in England and shockingly that figure drops to 1 in 18 in the East Midlands.
Those who suffer a cardiac arrest have almost zero chance of surviving if no one attempts CPR yet less than half of the nation’s adults feel able to intervene when they witness someone collapse – partly due to lack of confidence and training.
This Valentine’s Day (Wednesday 14 February), there will be multiple ‘pods’ across the Loughborough campus in which staff and students can learn CPR or refresh their existing skills and knowledge. There will also be designated sessions taking place that focus on performing the life-saving technique on infants.
The ‘Heart 2 Heart’ event aims to provide training to more than 1,000 people over 12 hours and raise awareness of the vital work of the British Heart Foundation in a bid to bring the East Midlands’ cardiac arrest survival rate in line with the national average.
He commented: “I’m called a First Responder but in a cardiac arrest situation really the first responder is the bystander, the person who sees it happen. The worst thing you can do is do nothing. It’s certainly a sad fact that people do die as a result of lack of confidence or lack of knowledge.
“Heart 2 Heart is a wonderful opportunity to train as many people as possible to be aware of how to recognise cardiac arrest and deal with it. CPR is a very basic skill and knowing what to do in the vital first minutes before help starts to arrive is what will save a life.”
Carrie Seaton, the British Heart Fundraising Manager for Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, said: “We need to tackle the high number of people not surviving a cardiac arrest here in the East Midlands and the Heart 2 Heart event will definitely help with that.
“We are looking forward to seeing how many people can learn CPR on the day and we are grateful that Loughborough University has chosen to support the British Heart Foundation in this way.”
The event is being supported by members of East Midlands Ambulance Service, certified first-aiders and University staff and student volunteers.
Dr Bob Winter, Medical Director at East Midlands Ambulance Service said: “If someone suffers a cardiac arrest their chances of survival increases considerably if it happens in front of someone who can start CPR immediately.
“By investing in their students the University is inspiring a generation of lifesavers.”
