Loughborough staff member awarded University Medal on the same day as her granddaughter graduates

Sandra Freeman from the University’s Domestic Services team received a Loughborough University Medal on the same day as her granddaughter Molly Jackson graduated with her Textiles degree.

Both of them were celebrated by the University community earlier today (Thursday 18 July) as part of Loughborough’s summer graduation ceremonies.

The medal is granted to members of the University who have made a distinctive and long-running contribution to the University. Medallists have championed the values of the University throughout long careers and consistently performed above-and-beyond the call of their duties.

Sandra has been recognised with a University Medal for her amazing commitment to the University after working as a cleaner in Domestic Services for over 50 consecutive years.

Sandra spent many years based at the University’s Central Park working in the Wavy Top and Schofield buildings before she moved to carry out the cleaning of Holywell Park. She continues to draw compliments from staff and students as she goes about her everyday tasks and has no intention of retiring. Sandra rarely slows down, but if she does it’s to chat to someone who looks like they need a friendly ear.

Sarah Roberts, Sandra’s manager who nominated her for the medal said: “Sandra is always there to offer support and guidance to colleagues by offering honest and unbiased advice.”

Sandra commented: “I am honoured to receive such recognition and be awarded the University Medal, but also extremely proud of my granddaughter Molly who is receiving her degree. For both to be happening on the same day is a very special moment in our lives, and one that we as a family will remember always.”

Andy Freeman, Sandra’s son and Molly’s uncle, also works at the University in Estates and Facilities Management. Andy works closely on delivering graduation and his team is responsible for a lot of the behind-the-scenes activities that make the event possible.

Andy said: “I am very proud to see my mum receive the University Medal having worked alongside both my mum and dad over the years at the University. To see my niece, Molly, graduate on the same day is so very special for all the family, we are all proud to celebrate all they have achieved together.”

Molly, who manages social media for the Loughborough Students’ Union, graduated with a degree in Textiles and plans to embark on a career in the textiles industry. You can see Molly’s final project on the Degree Show website.

She commented: “I am delighted that my grandmother will be awarded a medal at the graduation ceremony following mine. At 80 years old, she maintains two jobs and epitomises hard work and dedication. Her remarkable outlook on life and extraordinary work ethic are truly inspiring. In her 50 years of service, she has rarely taken a day off.

“As a cleaner at Loughborough University, she demonstrates her love for her job by bringing sweets to the department she cleans. She genuinely enjoys socialising with her colleagues and has an exceptional outlook on work and life. Her love for her family extends to her Loughborough University family, making her a cherished presence on campus.

“My grandparents are truly the centre of our family, and their dedication inspired my final year university project, which focused on their work within a lace factory. This project was my way of celebrating their life and immense contributions.

“This dual celebration of my academic achievement and my grandmother's exceptional contribution to the University makes this graduation particularly special for our family. It is a moment that encapsulates our shared values and the legacy of dedication and service that my grandparents have exemplified.”

Congratulations to both Sandra and Molly!
