Experts in Sport: Performance Analysis and Coaching in Tennis

With Wimbledon fast approaching, a focus has been placed on performance analysis and coaching. How do coaches, athletes, and analysts prepare for the tournament?

In this episode of the Experts in Sport podcast, host, Dr Stuart McErlain-Naylor discusses performance analysis and coaching in tennis with guest, Dr Anna Fitzpatrick.

Conversations centre around factors determining success in elite tennis, including studies performed at Wimbledon and Roland-Garros, and the implications of these for constraints-led approaches within tennis coaching. Other factors discussed include the practical challenges of coaching and performance analysis in elite tennis, and the appropriate adaptation of coaching constraints for junior tennis. Anna discusses the interaction between performance analysis and coaching, and how her own experiences in professional tennis affect her approach to this.

Throughout the episode, research is centred to evaluate its applicability to real-life situations within tennis training.

Dr Anna Fitzpatrick is a Lecturer in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. During her eight-year career as a professional tennis player, she won 22 international titles and achieved a career-high ranking of GB number two.
