Experts in Sport: Loughborough’s role in inspiring change in Para sport

With the 2024 Paralympic Games now well underway, it’s a crucial time to explore the evolving research landscape in Para and disability sport. 

The Games provide a platform to delve deeper into understanding the barriers athletes face, advancements in training and technology, and the societal impact of their achievements.

In the latest episode of the Experts in Sport podcast, a panel of experts reflect on the progress made towards inclusivity and consider what further steps are necessary to create equal opportunities for all athletes, regardless of ability. 

Host Martin Foster is joined by Vladyslava Kravchenko, Alasdair Donaldson, and Jennifer Wong from Loughborough University to discuss research within Para sport at Loughborough and its potential across the sporting landscape. 

Throughout the episode, conversations cover the development of Para sport at the University and the wide range of opportunities available to athletes and students. Guests discuss Loughborough’s commitment to becoming world leaders in Para sport, driven by a strategy that places opportunity and inclusivity at its core. From accessible gym facilities to dedicated support programmes, Loughborough is dedicated to encouraging participation in disability sports. 

Conversations also explore Loughborough’s ‘AT2030 Para Sport Against Stigma' research and innovation project, which is rooted in assistive technology. Guests also discuss deconstructing stigma surrounding assistive technology and disability sport, producing inequalities and preventing growth at a global level.

Vladyslava Kravchenko is a two-time Paralympian and Board Member of Malta Paralympic Committee, who is passionate about advocating for Para sport. She continues to raise awareness about the Paralympic Movement in Europe and has contributed widely to the development of Para sport in Malta. 

Alasdair Donaldson was appointed Head of Para Sport at Loughborough University in 2022, following a career at British Triathlon as Paralympic Pathway Manager. He is responsible for defining Loughborough’s strategic direction for Para sport and the continued development of the University’s disability sport offer. 

Jennifer Wong is a Project Manager at Loughborough University London, who has been leading the Global Disability Innovation Hub’s project, AT2030 Para Sport Against Stigma . Prior to joining the University, she led the team at the International Paralympic Committee, where she built the foundation for I’mPOSSIBLE - the Paralympic Movement's school-based education programme.
