Reflecting on my role as an IAS Doctoral Leader

I’m Sophie Milnes, a Human Geography PhD student in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities and I’m one of the current Doctoral Leaders for Loughborough’s Institute of Advanced Studies. My time in this role has been extremely inspiring. I have welcomed the opportunity to learn from international and inter-disciplinary academic work, and feel I have a diverse and enriched portfolio of skills as a result of the opportunities afforded to me by this role. I applied to be a Doctoral Leader as a PGR inspired by diverse and multi-disciplinary academic research, seeking opportunities to expand my skillset and become better connected with the academic research community on campus. Becoming immersed in the Institute’s thriving research culture has been an incredible experience that will always form a core part of my academic journey.

World leading inter-disciplinary inspiration.

As a human geographer, I often feel my research sits at the intersection of a series of academic communities; something I have often found challenging about my work. Through my role at IAS, I feel I have been afforded the opportunity to experience the strength, power and innovation embedded within inter-disciplinary research; not as a challenge but as something to be celebrated. I feel inspired and enriched by experts that break boundaries of their disciplines, and enhance creative practice, and this is something that inspires my own research and future career trajectory. I feel I will be leaving this role with greater depth of understanding of ‘behind the scenes’ practice of multi-disciplinary research, both theoretically and logistically; a rare experience as a postgraduate or early career researcher which I have welcomed.

Opportunities for Growth

A typical month working at IAS is extremely varied. From welcoming academics with world-leading expertise to campus, to tracking the IAS’ impact and legacy over time, there are multiple and diverse ways to get involved. I have enjoyed the flexibility of my role at IAS, with a welcoming and approachable team who have always been open to taking on new ideas and directions; they embody the values of the Institute as a team who bolster innovation and creativity. This has allowed me to explore various creative elements incorporated into academia, learning about the Institute adapt and expand facing new challenges and opportunities, and implementing this into promotional material such as blog writing and poster design.

Looking to the future

The role nurtures a portfolio of transferable skills that have contributed to my personal and professional development including networking, communication, and teamwork skills, as well as bolstering academic interests through engagement in various events and activities. I feel it is a unique opportunity, and one which I will reflect on with pride.

I would recommend this opportunity to any PGRs with a passion for academic communities and an enthusiasm to engage in the multiple and diverse elements of research culture events and practices. I am proud to be part of the Doctoral Leader alumni, and excited to see the new directions the Institute takes throughout the rest of my time here at Loughborough.
