Upcoming events to explore Nelson Mandela's legacy

In the lead-up to International Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July, staff, students, and members of the public are invited to take part in a series of events exploring Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

On Monday, 15 July, the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) will welcome Dr Yolandi Burger and Zandile Myeka for a special joint seminar hosted at International House and online.

Yolandi, an IAS Visiting Fellow, will present her work on Named after Nelson – a collaborative project exploring how Nelson Mandela’s legacy is reflected in the naming of places across the world.

Zandile, a Metadata and Photographs Archivist at the Nelson Mandela Foundation and IAS Residential Fellow, will showcase how the relationship between the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory Archive and the Loughborough Urban Graphic Object Archive has leveraged digital technologies to innovate practices, improve access and engage diverse audiences.

The seminar will start at 12pm, with lunch served at 1pm for those attending in person. Spaces can be booked on the IAS Seminar event page.

On Thursday 18 July, Loughborough researchers will join Leicester Urban Observatory and LCB Depot to co-host three events exploring the challenges and opportunities for urban graphic heritage in public spaces named after people.
