Prevention and treatment of medical device infections
Professor Axel Haverich, Hannover Medical School, Germany
Prof. Dr. med. Axel Haverich, born on March 9, 1953 in Lemgo, has been the director of the Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery at Hannover Medical School since 1996 and is widely recognized as a global leader in transplantation medicine and cardiac surgery.
Prof. Haverich has held a number of high-profile functions, including that of coordinator for the Clinical Research Unit “Lung Transplantation”, member of the Organ Transplant Committee of the German Medical Association and, in 2010 – 2011, President of the German Society of Surgery. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Leibniz University Hannover, the coordinator of the Cluster of Excellence REBIRTH and is the Member of the Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research and of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been awarded several prominent awards and prizes, most notably the Leibniz Prize for German Researchers of the DFG and the Lower Saxony State Prize. He is active in both basic and clinical research and particularly interested in the translation of discoveries from bench to bedside for the benefit of the patients.
