Studentships

Fully-funded studentships are available each year to develop projects embedding MBSE as a transformative approach across a range of industrial and public sectors.

Each studentship offers exciting scope to apply the methods, languages and tools for MBSE alongside the opportunity to work with an industry partner on a specific real-world challenge. We plan to offer an enhanced stipend to support our EngD / PhD candidates.

Our studentship topics

Research projects will focus on industrially relevant problems in the areas of systems for:

  • Net Zero Energy Systems
  • Net Zero Transport and Infrastructure
  • Quantum Systems
  • Digital Engineering, AI and Machine Learning
  • Defence and Security Systems
  • Health and Healthcare systems

Advanced Technology Digitalisation and Integration for Sustainable Nuclear Waste Management

Nuclear power generation provides around 15% of the UK’s electricity. This percentage is set to rise as we continue our journey to Net Zero. A key challenge is the safe management and disposal of radioactive waste.

Co-sponsored by Nuclear Waste Services, this PhD project will explore the seamless integration of the digital engineering technologies that address this challenge.

You will focus on developing advanced frameworks, methodologies and tools, taking into account the evolution and replacement of existing technologies as the complexity of nuclear waste management evolves.

Quantum Systems Engineering

The UK has invested significantly to transition quantum theories into quantum products, creating a quantum-enabled economy within the coming decade - revolutionising a variety of sectors including healthcare, energy, transport and many other sectors.

Working closely with the National Physical Laboratory, you will develop novel approaches, methods and tools to engineer and integrate revolutionary quantum technologies - for example, embedding quantum sensors, clocks and encryption in a quantum communication network.

This PhD programme will support your development as a future thought leader in a rapidly growing area of technology.

Modes of studentship

The cluster supports various modes of studentship to support different individual needs:

  • Full-time EngDoc - jointly funded by an industrial sponsor and Loughborough University
  • Full-time PhD - fully funded by an external sponsor
  • iCase studentship - fully funded by an industrial sponsor

Part-time routes are also available.

In addition, you will receive Master’s Level training in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
