News from the NRC - February 2023

This is the first in a new series of monthly updates, providing a round-up of news about the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) and the NRC Clinical and Academic Partnership (NCAP), particularly relating to rehabilitation research, innovation, education and training.

#RehabilitationMatters is a series of stories and perspectives from people who care about effective clinical rehabilitation and the benefits it provides. It aims to raise awareness of what clinical rehabilitation involves and how the NRC will champion best practice in this area. The latest article features Dr Ishara Dharmasena from Loughborough University, who looks at the role that super-smart textiles could play in improving rehabilitation worldwide. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)’s Rehabilitation Technologies Network (RTN) successfully delivered the second of three ‘Grand Challenge’ workshops in January on the theme of Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation.

  • Researchers at Loughborough University and University College London have had their ideas funded following the Cardiorespiratory Rehabilitation workshop in July 2022.
  • Applications are now open for the Neurological Rehabilitation workshop at the University of Nottingham on 5-6 July 2023.

Two NRC-funded PhD students at the University of Nottingham are recruiting for their studies. Natalie Gray is exploring early mobilisation following spinal cord injury and Meri Westlake is seeking input from registered healthcare professionals on their experience of hospital-acquired deconditioning. An ambassador for the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) Programme, Luke Wigman has run 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents for a record third time. Luke raised £1 million for the DNRC when he first completed the challenge in 2017. More here.
