Curator Comment by FUKAGAWA Maki about “Nostalgic Garden” by HAN Jiayi
Cultivate has various meanings. Among its many meanings, the meaning of cultivate in this work is probably ‘growth and development’. In terms of growth, we sometimes use the expression cultivate for both humans and plants.
The vegetables painted in the lower left have lush green foliage. The vegetables behind it are bearing red fruits with a glossy texture. Both vegetables are fresh and look ready to eat. The person standing next to them looks like a boy or a girl. Since the face is not depicted, various ages can be imagined.
Because it is painted in watercolor, the whole work is gentle and seems to capture a beautiful momentary view of the world. This work, which looks like a part of a beautiful moment in the process of growing up, will give many people a sense of tenderness.
Curator Comment by FUKAGAWA Maki about “Lichen Exploration” by Amy WHITFIELD
Cultivate has various meanings. Cultivate is used in various ways such as ‘improving skills’ and ‘deepening relationships’. Among these, this work was made with the concept of farming.
The first thing that jumps out when you see the work is the deep green color. It seems that green is emphasized on the white background. This green represents the land and crops for gardening, and is packed with the techniques and ideas of the creator, such as the use of tracing paper as well as paint. And the color made by the bold method of using red cabbage is the perfect technique for expressing the artist’s idea of Cultivate.
