Curator Comment by TODA Sayaka about “What Flowers Do You Have?” by TERAKADO Hiromi
Cultivate has the meaning of creating things by one's own hands, such as ‘cultivating’, ‘nourishing’, and ‘refining’ as a dictionary meaning. From this point of view, the word has a lot to do with artists.
A woman who grows flowers from her head and stands quietly. This work, that gives a lovely impression with its colors, was created by TERAKADO Hiromi.
According to the artist, the flowers represent goals, and the head itself represents a vase, meaning that each of the many flowers is a different goal.
Also she expressed the head as a vase so that the goals could change. This part accurately captures the essence of human beings. Because human thoughts and minds change, it is natural that goals change accordingly.
This painting conveys the artist's seriousness about art.
I think this year's theme was chosen so that artists could demonstrate their uniqueness. Originality is a unique jewel of artists, and when exhibited in public, it shines tremendously. I really want to support unique artists.
Curator Comment by TODA Sayaka about “Cultivate” by Matt ROBERTS
If you look up cultivate in a dictionary, it means to plow , foster, and nourish things with your own hands.
However, this work does not seem to include such an intention, and it seems that the word cultivate itself is expressed from the artist’s own perspective.
Most of the work is occupied by an abstract figure that could be read as the initial letter ‘c’ of the word cultivate, and the word cultivate excluding the letter ‘c’ is placed under it. From this, it seems that he tried to show the word cultivate itself rather than express its meaning. The letters may be just the answer to the expression.
When you see this graphic work, it easily stands out as a work because it has a color scheme of yellow and black. The composition is made up of lines and angular figures, reminiscent of electronic circuits.
Since the word cultivate is a word, it naturally has a meaning. However, when I looked at his work, I thought that it was possible to express it from a unique perspective rather than expressing its meaning as such.
