Cultivating Skills and New Friendships on a Global Scale during a Pandemic
I wish to congratulate the students of both universities who have made artworks for this online exhibition. Many people around the world will enjoy seeing your wonderful creations. I also wish to congratulate the 2nd year Joshibi University students in the Concentration in Art and Culture for working together to do curatorial activities for this exhibition.
For Joshibi Art and Culture students, this exhibition is a culmination of a year-long project as part of their studies. In class, they work together as curators to organize the “Joshibi Postcard Project”, they design posters, make a call for postcard artworks (open to all Joshibi students), organize artwork files, interview artists, and write explanatory texts about the artworks.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Joshibi students would then go to Loughborough to help set up the joint postcard exhibition, opening reception, and hold gallery talks, as part of their Overseas Art Studies Trip 2B subject.
During the pandemic, this has not been possible, but we have switched our activities to an online format to allow the project to be realized. An added bonus of this is that the artists in Japan can see the exhibition of their works online on a permanent website.
In January each year, Loughborough University students studying in the Art and Design Foundation Course do a week-long project making postcard artworks. A selection of these artworks are then sent to Joshibi University.
The Joshibi Art and Culture students choose one Joshibi artwork and one Loughborough artwork, and conduct interviews with the artists before writing short “Curator Comments” about their impressions of the works in relation to the exhibition theme.
In February 2022, as they were unable to go to the UK, the art and culture students participated in joint online art classes with Loughborough Univeristy students. They also participated in online English classes, and held a cultural exchange session with Loughborough students studying Japanese language.
The results of their studies can be seen in this online exhibition, where postcards made by Joshibi students are exhibited interspersed with those made by Loughborough students in the Main Gallery, and in the Curation Gallery, where you can read short texts about selected postcards.
It is my pleasure to work on this programme for the 7th year. It is also always interesting and inspiring to work with Loughborough faculty to co-develop the joint classes as part of this programme between Loughborough University and Joshibi University of Art and Design.
I wish to my deep felt appreciation to the Loughborough faculty and students for welcoming our students and making this such an enriching experience. I look forward to cultivating our friendship further in years to come.

パンデミック時に世界規模で培われるスキルと新たな友情
本展の作品を制作された両大学の学生の皆様に、心よりお祝い申し上げます。皆さんの素晴らしい作品は、世界中の多くの人が見て楽しむことができるでしょう。また、女子美術大学芸術文化専攻の2年生が、この展覧会のために協力してキュレーション活動を行ったことを祝福したいと思います。
女子美術大学の学生にとって、この展覧会は1年間の学習の集大成とるものです。作業にあたっては、キュレーターとして「女子美ポストカードプロジェクト」を企画し、ポスターデザイン、ポストカード作品募集（女子美生対象）、作品ファイル整理、作家インタビュー、作品解説の執筆などを行います。
COVID-19の流行以前は、女子美生がラフバラに行き、「海外芸術研修2B」の科目として、共同ポストカード展の設置の手伝い、オープニングレセプション準備、ギャラリートークなどを行いました。
パンデミック中は、それができないため、活動をオンラインに切り替えて、プロジェクトを実現できるようにしました。その結果、日本にいたままアーティストが常設のウェブサイトで作品の展示をオンライン上で見ることができるというおまけもついています。
毎年1月、ラフバラ大学のアート＆デザインファンデーションコースで学ぶ学生たちが、1週間かけてポストカード・アート作品を作るプロジェクトを実施します。その中から選ばれた作品が女子美術大学に送られます。
女子美術大学の学生は、女子美術大学の作品とラフバラの作品をそれぞれ1点ずつ選び、作家へのインタビューを行った上で、展覧会のテーマに沿って作品の印象を「キュレーター・コメント」にまとめます。
2022年2月、芸術文化専攻の学生は英国に行くことができなかったため、ラフバラ大学の学生と合同でオンラインアート授業に参加しました。また、オンライン英語コースにも参加し、日本語を学ぶラフバラの学生との文化交流会を開催しました。
このオンライン展覧会では、女子美の学生とラフバラ大学の学生がともに制作したポストカードが「メインギャラリー」に展示され、「キュレーションギャラリー」ではポストカードにまつわる短い文章を読むことができるようになっています。
7年目を迎えてもこのプログラムに携わることができたことを嬉しく思っています。また、ラフバラ大学と女子美術大学のプログラムの一環として、ラフバラ大学の教員と共同で授業を開発することは、常に興味深く、刺激的なことです。
ラフバラの先生方、学生の皆さん、女子美の学生を受け入れてくださり、このような充実した経験をさせてくださったことに深く感謝いたします。この先、さらに友情を深めていくことを楽しみにしています。
