Dr Jon Petzing is the Senior Lecturer in Metrology at Loughborough within the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical & Manufacturing Engineering. Originally training as a Stockbroker, Jon changed direction and studied Mechanical Engineering and worked for British Aerospace (now BAe Systems) specialising in the manufacture of missile systems.
Another change of direction resulted in Jon working with Nestlé and Loughborough University designing and developing in-process ultrasonic cutting systems for confectionary - and more specifically the optical metrology tools required to measure the performance of these cutting tools.
Jon then joined the Loughborough University Department of Mechanical Engineering academic staff in 1996 as the NPL Lecturer in Optical Engineering, before joining the Department of Manufacturing Engineering as the Lecturer in Metrology and subsequently Senior Lecturer in Metrology within the Wolfson School.

Jon’s applied research is concerned with; biometrology, contact and non-contact dimensional metrology, surface metrology, optical metrology, acoustic metrology, pressure metrology and metrology standards, much of which is in the context of High Value Manufacturing engineering.
Jon’s work encompasses measurement instrument development / design, industrial integration, measurement confidence, standards and metrology guides, with over 20 PhD Doctoral Researchers resulting in over 190 scholarly articles and publications. His most recent research is investigating variation in biometrology – specifically Flow Cytometry, as an underpinning definition of data confidence to inform biomanufacturing process control. This is examining variation of metrology data analysis, both from a human operator perspective and from an automated software viewpoint.
Jon is responsible for the development of the Loughborough University dedicated UKAS standard Advanced Dimensional Metrology Laboratory amounting to £1.2m of metrology equipment investment to date. He was a Scientific Advisory Board member for the UK Centre of Excellence in Metrology for Micro and Nano Technologies (CEMMNT) (2007 – 2009), and has had research collaborations with the Australian (CSIRO), Malaysian (SIRIM), UK (NPL & LGC) National Measurement Institutes. He was a member of the National Measurement Office Engineering & Flow Working Group (2012 - 2015), responsible for steering UK metrology research and allocation of £10m+ pa (NPL and NEL). Jon is now a member of the BSI Committee – BTI Biotechnology advising on aspects of biometrology for ISO TC276 standards development.
