Loughborough Professor made Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Professor Sarah Mills

Professor Sarah Mills has been awarded a Fellowship by the Academy of Social Sciences. She is one of just 45 outstanding social scientists from across the UK to have been conferred Fellowship of the Academy this autumn.

Sarah is a Professor of Human Geography with internationally recognised research achievements in human geography and the wider social sciences. Her academic contributions have focused on important issues related to children and young people, such as youth citizenship, education, and volunteering. Her research through several UKRI-funded projects has previously been recognised by the Royal Geographical Society (Gill Memorial Award) and she is a regular expert advisor to UK Government and international organisations.  Prof. Mills is currently an invited member of the Department of Culture, Media & Sport’s ‘College of Experts’ and she has supported several All-Party Parliamentary Groups and evidence enquiries led by UK Parliament.

Speaking about the Fellowship, Professor Mills said: “I am absolutely delighted to receive this recognition from The Academy of Social Sciences. It’s a significant honour. I’ve always had a commitment to knowledge exchange and communicating the value of social science research to stakeholders and public audiences, so I’m really looking forward to championing the role of the social sciences more broadly as a Fellow.” The Academy of Social Sciences is the national academy of academics, practitioners and learned societies in the social sciences. The sector’s leading independent voice in the UK, they champion the vital role social sciences play in education, governments and business.

The Academy’s Fellowship is made up of distinguished individuals from academic, public, private and third sectors, across the full spectrum of the social sciences. Through leadership, scholarship, applied research, policymaking, and practice, they help to deepen the understanding of, and address, some of the toughest challenges facing the world.

All Academy Fellows are conferred following independent and robust peer review by the Academy’s Nominations Committee. They are selected on the basis of the substantial contributions they have made to policy and practice, and for going above and beyond the normal requirements of their roles.

Head of Geography and Environment, Michael Hoyler, added “Many congratulations to Sarah on the award of this prestigious Fellowship, which recognises her outstanding achievements as an impactful research leader. Sarah is also a committed educator and doctoral researcher supervisor, inspiring many students to pursue social science and improve public policy and society.”
