Campus access

Information updated 5 March, 2026

A short section of Margaret Keay Road will be closed from the Garden of Remembrance to the corner of the Morag Bell building for the duration of the project. Both the Garden and Morag Bell Building will remain accessible. Pedestrian routes around the site are also altered.

The pedestrian access off the A512 Ashby Road onto Margaret Keay Road (near to the Cayley hall of residence) has been closed to allow preparatory work for construction traffic. This is the safest way for construction vehicles to enter the campus and ensures that disruption to Epinal Way is kept to a minimum. Once the preparatory work on this route is complete, we will review whether there is scope to permit safe pedestrian access again.

The footpath located at the rear of Wavy Top, leading towards James France Walk, is now closed until 30 September 2027. During this period the footpath will be an emergency egress route only for staff and students in Wavy Top. Emergency escape signage is installed to guide occupants in the event of an emergency.

All vehicle and pedestrian route closures and diversions are signposted on site.

Traffic management changes for the new student accommodation development

From week commencing 9 March 2026, there will be a significant increase in construction vehicles entering and moving across campus, as part of the development of the new student accommodation near the Edward Herbert Building.

The vehicles will enter and exit the campus via the Cayley Gates (at point A on the map) and follow the routes marked in blue across campus to the two entrances to the construction site at B and C.

In order to protect the safety of our staff, students and visitors as they move around campus, we are making some changes to traffic management in the area. These arrangements are expected to be in place for at least the next 18 months, supporting both site safety and the delivery of the construction programme.

  • Additional pedestrian crossings will be installed along Margaret Keay Road, between Cayley Gates and the construction site, to support safe movement through the area.
  • Crowd control barriers and signs will be installed at key locations to direct pedestrians to the safe crossing points

Please do adhere to these traffic management controls to ensure that everyone can move safely around campus while construction progresses.
