Loughborough Sport are excited to launch a new Cycling Coaching offer. Whether you are an experienced cyclist, wanting to take your ride to the next level, or are looking for a new challenge, our bespoke package has something for everyone.

Our Approach

This year, Loughborough Sport are launching a new Cycling Coaching offer as part of our successful Support Services.  Based in the Performance Cycling Hub, our cycling coaching team work with our Loughborough Lightning Women's Elite team, as well as our Cycling academy.  Max Holgate, our Endurance coach is ready to work with clients and progress them on the bike.

We combine science and knowledge with personal relationships to create a bespoke training plan for each rider to help them reach their goals. 

Who is it for?

Are you an experienced cyclist who wants to improve performance in Sportives?  Or new to cycling and want to work with a coach to help you fall in love with this new hobby?  

Our bespoke package deal caters to everyone, from performance athletes looking to enhance and refine their skills to new cyclists.

Endurance Cycling Coach

Hi, I am Max Holgate, the cycling coach.

With 9 years cycling coach experience, I have recently been appointed as the Endurance Cycling Coach at Loughborough Sport/ University. Within this, I prescribe training plans for our very own Loughborough Lightning Women’s Elite Development Team racing both nationally and Internationally for the 2024/2025 season. I also provide training prescription, alongside technical development and tactical racing sessions, for the Loughborough Cycling Academy. 

I have recently completed my Master’s degree in Physiology and Nutrition at Loughborough University, with a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at undergraduate level. The foundation of my coaching and training prescription science-informed but always considers how this information will best optimise training for the client to achieve their personal goals. 

I am a British Cycling qualified coach with qualifications in:

  • Level 3 Road/ TT  
  • Level 2 accreditations in Road/ TT, Track and Cyclocross disciplines.

I also have Director Sportif experience and have actively supported races on an international level for the last 2 seasons.  I want to help keen cyclists progress on their own goals and targets the best I can.

What's Involved

Training Software

We use an online coaching platform. By using the cycling training software, we can create an individualised and informed training plan to help you achieve your cycling goals.

Through using your training history and understanding your physiological profile as a cyclist we can identify your strengths and areas to improve giving a clear direction and focus to your training. By using Intervals.icu and having consistent communication we can adjust training to suit your lifestyle, commitments and training demands to give you the best possible chance of success while having clarity and confidence.

Onboarding Process

When you start with us you will be guided through an extensive onboarding process. This helps to understand your motivations, commitments and set goals to construct an optimised training plan for you. This will involve, filling out a form to capture a range of information and then a 30-minute consultation to delve in deeper into understanding you how you work best to set the training plan into motion.

Training Plan

A bespoke personalised training plan will be created to suit your individual performance needed. Each training block will be planned and reviewed between you and your coach, so you have clarity and understanding to support your knowledge and reasons why you training is important for you to reach your goals.

Communication with your coach

Once you are underway with your training plan, a bi-weekly check of your training with added comments will be completed to keep you up to date. This will provide feedback to your sessions and give further direction for the rest of your training week. Where needed this will provide opportunity to adjust the training plan if needed to ensure it is up-to-date and ready for you to achieve your training targets for the rest of the week. On a monthly basis a 30-minute review where there will be a more in-depth feedback process and to construct the plan for the next training block.
