Strategy Support Secondment Scheme

The launch of the University’s new strategy has created opportunities for Loughborough to do things differently and drive forward progress.

Our people are key to delivering this work and creating better futures. To provide development opportunities that enable colleagues to gain new skills and experiences around the institution and contribute to the delivery of our strategy to 2030, the University has launched a Strategy Support Secondment Scheme.

The scheme encompasses secondments that support both the Enabling Programme (Projects Enable, Expectations, Compliance, Workplace, Reputation and Digital) and special project commissioned by the Vice-Chancellor’s Office in relation to the strategy.

The scheme is open to existing staff from all grades, encompassing Professional Services staff (whether in Schools or central Services) and RTE and SSA staff. Doctoral Researchers and Imago staff are not eligible. Secondments will typically be between 3-9 months, and between 0.2 and 0.4 FTE (equivalent to one to two days per week).

Three key principles underpin the scheme:

  1. Being transparent and fair: providing an opportunity for colleagues to engage with the strategy and its enabling programme.
  2. Giving opportunities for professional development: providing opportunities for colleagues to gain additional professional experience and skills across a range of areas by engaging with the strategy and enabling programme and contributing to their work.
  3. Living our values: ensuring that we are demonstrating the University’s values by conducting work relating to the strategy by being collaborative, authentic, creative, responsible, and adventurous.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for a secondment as part of the scheme?

The scheme is open to existing staff from all grades, encompassing Professional Services staff (whether based in Schools or central Services) and RTE and SSA staff. Doctoral Researchers and Imago staff are not eligible.

How long are the secondments?

The secondments will typically vary in length from 3-9 months, depending upon the opportunity.

Can someone on a part-time contract apply for a secondment?

Yes. If they are interested, they can apply and note their working hours on the application form. This will then be taken into consideration during the process.

Can someone apply for more than one secondment?

Yes.

Can the applicant go for a higher- or lower-grade secondment than their current role?

Yes. Where someone is seconded to higher graded role, they will receive an uplift in pay. Where someone is seconded to a lower graded role, their substantive pay will not be affected (i.e. it will stay the same). In light of this, secondees may be asked to do duties commensurate with their substantive grade.

Does the applicant need to talk to their manager and get their approval before applying?

Applicants must inform their manager of their application. Secondments will be agreed in the context of balancing the workload of both the receiving and releasing areas.

What is the application process?

For each secondment, applicants must complete the electronic application form (hard copies can be provided), which comprises information about their current role and working patterns as well as an expression of interest where they should demonstrate why they are suited to a role and the relevant experience they bring.

Once an application deadline has passed, applications for a role will then be reviewed by the manager overseeing the secondment, Strategic Change Programme Manager, Change Portfolio Manager and Director for Organisational Development and Change. This is a single-stage process and there will be no interviews.

If a secondment is offered, does the secondee receive a new contract?

They will receive a letter confirming the arrangements for their secondment from HR. At the end of the secondment, they will revert to their substantive position on their normal working hours.
