This guide is intended to give you detailed information about the modules available to you as an incoming exchange student. Please read the general information below before looking at the page for your host School/Department.

Module Choice

As part of your application to Loughborough, you will need to complete a learning agreement which sets out your module choices and is approved by both your home institution and the relevant Exchange Co-ordinator at Loughborough University.  Your host School/Department may expect you to discuss your module choices with the Exchange Co-ordinator before submitting your learning agreement.  

The information provided on these pages and in the Module Specifications Portal is correct to the best of our knowledge.  It is occasionally necessary to make changes to the modules offered in accordance with the University's Terms and Conditions of Study. If this affects you, your host School/Department will contact you with further information.

It is expected that exchange students will study 60 Loughborough credits (30 ECTS credits per semester).  This is the same as a full-time undergraduate. Any flexibility in this will be detailed on the page for your School/Department.

The page for your host School/Department will indicate whether or not this is possible.

Some modules require previous study of certain topics at an appropriate level.  If you are unsure about whether you can choose a particular module, please contact the relevant Loughborough Exchange Co-ordinator for advice. 

Modules marked with the § symbol are classed as having sensitive content. This refers to any content that a student may find to be difficult, sensitive or challenging to think about. The scope of topics that are potentially sensitive will vary according to the nature of the subject and the students taking the module.

Exchange students may only undertake a research project by registering for a designated project module.  Not all Schools and Departments offer these to exchange students and they may be limited to students spending the full academic year at Loughborough.  The detailed page for your School/Department will give details of any project modules which are available.

Timetable clashes and changes to your learning agreement

Whilst we always try to accommodate the requests of our exchange students, places on modules are limited and may be subject to you meeting pre-requisites. Additionally, as learning agreements are subject to the approval of your respective School/Department Exchange Co-ordinator, we cannot guarantee that you will be offered a place on all of your chosen modules.

Timetables are released near to the start of the semester; therefore it is possible that we will be unable to confirm if there is a ‘fit’ for all the modules you have chosen until the first week of your studies. We recommend that you have a few extra module choices in mind, so that if your first choice modules are not available due to timetable clashes or demand, you can opt to take others.

If you need to change your module choices, you will need to revise your learning agreement and obtain approval from your home University and your Exchange Co-ordinator at Loughborough.

Changes to module registrations may only be made during the first two weeks of the semester. 

Module Specifications

Every module has a specification which gives detailed information about the module content, type of teaching (e.g. lectures, seminars, lab sessions), when the module is taught (Semester 1, Semester 2 or across the entire academic year), and how the module is assessed.  If there are any pre-requisites, or the module contains sensitive content, this will be shown in the module specification.

Within the Module Specifications Portal you can select a School/Department to see the modules offered (not all may be available to exchange students) and/or search by module code or keyword.
