Financing your exchange

Tuition fees, student loans and other funding

You will need to plan your finances for your exchange and consider the cost of travel, a visa or residence permit (if applicable), accommodation and living expenses.

Tuition fees

As an outgoing exchange student, you will not be expected to pay tuition fees to your host institution, although you should check for additional fees, e.g. for registration.  However, tuition fees are payable to Loughborough University.

If you have opted to attend a fee-paying study abroad programme which is not part of a reciprocal exchange agreement, tuition fees will be payable to both your host institution and Loughborough.

2024/25 tuition fees

Students with UK/EU fee status

If you are studying abroad for a semester or full year in Part I (the exchange is undertaken as a sandwich year in your programme leading to a DIS/DIntS/DPS), your tuition fee will be £1,385.

If you are studying or taking a research project abroad for a semester during Part B, C or D, your tuition fee will be £9,250.

Students with International fee status

If you are studying abroad for a semester or full year in Part I (the exchange is undertaken as a sandwich year in your programme leading to a DIS/DIntS/DPS), your tuition fee will be 20% of the full-time fee in the academic year in which the placement is taken.

If you are studying or taking a research project abroad for a semester during Part B, C or D, you will pay the full year’s tuition fee to Loughborough University.

The University will email you to confirm the exact fee payable in advance of the start of the academic year.

Student Finance (UK funded students)

UK funded students continue to be eligible for tuition fee and maintenance loans whilst undertaking an exchange programme in Part I.  Funding from Student Finance England can continue on a similar basis to a normal study year, calculated with reference to household income but at a higher overseas rate.

Tuition fee loans are only available to cover your Loughborough University tuition fees.

If you are funded by Student Finance England or Student Finance Wales and your exchange programme starts at least 25 working days prior to the start of the academic year at Loughborough University, the University may be able to arrange for your maintenance loan to be paid early.  The Placements, Exchanges and Governance Team will contact you with further information in advance of your exchange.

The Student Advice and Support Service provide detailed information about student finance for exchange and placement students and can offer individual guidance if required.
