Meet Donald Barron
Donald Barron is the postgraduate Programme Director for Applied Sport Performance Analysis.
Donald has a range of research interests around performance analysis, elite performance, sports analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning. With years of experience working alongside highly respected managers, coaches, players and performance staff, Donald is an expert in performance analysis within coaching processes, modern scouting and recruitment.
He is now utilising his experiences and skillset to create world-class performance analysis training and support, in collaboration with elite practitioners and performance analysis partners.
Using innovative technology to identify sporting talent
I am interested in a range of topics around performance analysis, elite performance and sports analytics. These include talent identification and player recruitment in elite sport, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Findings from my research and worked experience in sport are at the heart of the Coaching Process and Applied Performance Analysis Workflows module that I deliver. My research uses artificial neural networks to identify talent for player recruitment in professional football.
I’ve spent over a decade working in professional football, including the Premier League and Championship, as Head of Performance Analysis and Head of Technical Scouting. During this time, I’ve developed expertise in using innovative processes and technology to deliver top-level support for first-team environments.
You’ll build your practical skills through an extended placement, providing performance analysis support for either Loughborough University’s performance athletes or one of our external sport partners. These include Premier League and Football League clubs, Premiership Rugby teams, County Cricket clubs, and more. This experience will help prepare you for your future career and develop your skills in an applied setting, providing additional opportunities to analyse and reflect on your own professional practice.
