Our MSc Accounting and Finance programme provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue roles in professional accounting firms, financial institutions, corporations, and non-profit organisations. It embeds cutting edge academic content together with the opportunity to undertake a consultancy project and build critical CV assets.

The MSc Accounting and Finance programme provides a thorough grounding across both critical disciplines for those considering careers in professional accounting or the internal finance function of a wide range of organisations on the one hand, or banking and investment on the other. It also offers vital knowledge and skills for those interested in setting up and sustaining new ventures.
 
This MSc in Accounting and Finance is ideal if you have a non-finance business-related undergraduate degree and are looking to transition into either an accounting or finance career. Alternatively, if you have a background in accounting or finance, you can use it to deepen your skills and gain a well-recognised postgraduate qualification.

Develop a sought-after mix of accounting and financial expertise

The structure of the programme has been carefully designed to provide students with an exciting and contemporary learning experience that includes:

  • Flexible design: The flexibility to specialise in finance or accounting, or maintain a balance between the two.
  • Financial analysis: A strong thread of accounting and financial analysis throughout the programme, offering an excellent set of these much sought-after analytical tools.
  • Explore critical management accounting in detail: explore cost accounting, budgeting, performance evaluation, and strategic decision-making tools that support business objectives through a rigorous study of management accounting.
  • Contemporary finance theory: The content exposes students to a wide range of corporate finance issues. Students can then specialise further into the study of, for example, the techniques and models used in the valuation of securities, or choose a module devoted to the application of corporate finance theory to mergers and acquisitions, stock market listings and a range of major transactions companies will undertake.
  • Sustainability and ESG coverage: students need to be well versed on high profile issues such as those surrounding climate change, corporate governance and responsible investing. Our MSc structure provides students with the opportunity to study these issues as soon as they begin their programme at the University.
  • A focus on professional skills for success, to ensure that your interpersonal skills develop alongside your technical skills.

Graduate ready to put your skills into action 

You will leave the programme well prepared for a career in accountancy or finance. On the accounting side, roles would include chartered or certified accounting in practice, management accountant roles in industry, as well as a diverse range of careers requiring a deep knowledge of accounting in organisations including start-ups, charities, regulators and multinational companies. On the finance side, roles would include financial analyst, buy-side investment analyst, and working in the finance function of a diverse suite of organisations.
 
The core programme content will give you a rigorous understanding of accounting and finance fundamentals, along with the practical skills needed to address complex management issues, improve practice, and meet the challenges of today’s fast-paced business world. This will help you be fully prepared to put your knowledge and skills into action. There are also opportunities to build additional CV assets and micro-credentials to help you stand out in the job market.

Gain practical experience through the Loughborough Consultancy Project

A key component of the MSc Accounting and Finance is the opportunity to participate in a consultancy project. This allows our students to apply theoretical and research-led knowledge from their programme to real-world challenges, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Beyond this, the consultancy experience will enhance employability by demonstrating practical expertise to potential employers. Additionally, the project is structured to maximise networking opportunities and build the confidence needed for our graduates to make purposeful progress to achieving their career goals.

Compulsory modules

Corporate Finance Fundamentals (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to 

  • Develop a critical understanding of modern corporate finance theory and fixed income valuations;
  • To enable students, through the application of appropriate tools and techniques, to both evaluate and solve complex fixed income and corporate finance problems.

International Financial Accounting and Reporting (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to explore the nature, purposes and roles of accounting in organisations;
  • to introduce students to the international regulatory framework of accounting;
  • to learn fundamental principles of international financial reporting standards and terms used;
  • to master the preparation of statements of profit or loss, statements of financial position and statements of cash flow under international financial reporting standards;
  • to establish an awareness of some of the advantages and limitations of financial accounting to help decision making.

Management Accounting: Decision Making (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to introduce students to the concepts and techniques of management accounting;
  • to evaluate different overhead cost assignment methods;
  • to apply management accounting concepts and tools to support short-term and long-term decisions;
  • to examine the budgeting process in planning for profits;
  • to develop relevant transferable skills.

Professional Skills for Success (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop a critical appreciation of the professional skills essential for success in finance and accounting roles;
  • to develop both the technical and soft skills required when working in finance or accounting roles;
  • to build the skills required for tackling finance and accounting assignments when working indidually or in teams;
  • to develop skills in using Office 365 (Excel, Word and Powerpoint) that are needed to work effectively in finance and accounting roles.

Financial Markets and Institutions (15 credits)

The module aims to provide an overview of the financial system, including: an appreciation of the economic problems that financial institutions and markets seek to overcome; an understanding of the organisation and operation of the major financial institutions and markets; an appreciation of the impact of technology and regulation on the evolution of the industry; and an awareness of how alternative structures of financial systems seek to solve common problems.

Corporate Governance and Responsibility (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop an understanding of corporate governance and responsibility
  • to explore different governance mechanisms.

Management Accounting: Control and Performance Management (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to build on the pre-requisite modules;
  • to examine standard cost and variances;
  • to explain the behavioural considerations in the design, implementation and operation of management accounting systems;
  • to encourage a critical understanding of performance measurement and management in organisations, taking into account factors such as economic, cultural, political, social and behavioural;
  • to examine the management accountants’ role in changing organisational contexts;
  • to understand the theoretical underpinnings that underlie different management accounting and control research;
  • to consider current and future directions in management accounting and control research including the role of the management accountant;
  • to develop relevant transferable skills.

Topics in Financial Reporting and Analysis (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to build on the knowledge gained in earlier studies of financial accounting and reporting;
  • to explore relationships between theory and practice in financial reporting;
  • to broaden and deepen students' knowledge and understanding in respect of published financial reports;
  • to develop an understanding of contemporary issues in accounting and the challenges of with different proposals and solutions;
  • to further encourage an openness to new ideas and awareness that in many situations there is a range of alternatives which should be evaluated;
  • to develop relevant transferable skills.

Applied Corporate Finance (15 credits)

The aims of this module are:

  • to build on fundamental theories of corporate finance to explore more advanced corporate finance topics
  • to develop skills which will allow the student to analyse mergers and acquisitions in depth

Financial Statements Analysis & Valuations (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • deepen and broaden students' understanding of conceptual and theoretical issues in accounting and financial management through real life examples;
  • develop an understanding of the analysis of firms' financial reports relevant to the investment decision and firms' valuations.
  • develop an understanding of, and apply, the tools and techniques available to value the stock of listed public companies and apply them;
  • develop and enhance transferable skills.

Sustainable Finance (15 credits)

The aims of this module are to:

  • To provide students with an understanding of sustainable finance and its role in promoting sustainable development
  • To develop students' critical thinking skills in evaluating investment decisions through the lens of sustainability
  • To provide students with practical skills in integrating ESG factors in investment decision-making and valuation
  • To equip students with transferable skills in research, analysis, and communication of sustainability-related topics.

Data Analytics for Accounting and Finance (15 credits)

The overall aim of this module is to develop a broad spectrum of big data analytical knowledge and skills applicable to real-life problem-solving associated with the accounting and finance professions.

In particular, the module aims to:

  • explore unstructured data and its application in accounting and finance;
  • further encourage an openness to new ideas and awareness that, in many situations, there is a range of alternatives which should be evaluated;
  • develop relevant transferable skills.

Compulsory modules

Consultancy Project (45 credits)

This module is an opportunity to tackle a real organisational problem in a specific discipline, as prescribed by a 'client' company, working in a group. The aims are:

  • to apply discipline-specific knowledge, covered in the post graduate programme, in addition to knowledge gained from previous studies (if relevant) to a real-world problem/situation.
  • to undertake business consultancy across the entire lifecycle of a project from inception to delivery.
  • to develop consulting skills, including those related to academic research, such as effective communication with the company, choosing appropriate theories/frameworks and effectively collecting and using data as needed.
  • to effectively work in a group.
  • to deliver a range of agreed outputs to a deadline.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A 2:2 honours degree with a minimum of 55% or equivalent international qualification. It is helpful, but not essential, to have studied a subject with a quantitative element such as business, accounting, economics, mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry, geography, computer science or data analytics. We will consider applicants who have taken subjects that do not have a quantitative element but ask them to do some pre-course reading before the start of the programme. No prior finance study is required. Applicants with relevant professional experience or professional qualifications would be welcomed.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:

  • School of Business and Economics: not considered
