Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour. It looks at this from a variety of perspectives including behavioural, biological and cognitive. It can include the study of motivation, personality, clinical disorders, emotion and more. It also has a research focus which seeks to use testing, observation and a number of other techniques to test psychological theory and build a better understanding of behaviour.
My degree, although helpful to my current role, is not specifically related to my job. It was the skills I learnt at university alongside my degree that have helped get me to where I am now.

Why did you choose Psychology
I have always found human behaviour fascinating and the idea of studying that in depth, particularly in the context of health and clinical disorders was so exciting to me. I had studied psychology at school and was keen to be able to look at research and theories in more depth that I had been able to at A-level.
Rosie's advice
Don’t panic if you don’t know exactly what you want to do yet!
When I started my degree, I had a completely different idea of what I wanted to do as my career. It was through my extra-curricular activities at university that I found a love for working with and supporting students in volunteer roles and volunteer development.
Rosie’s experience as a student
University was quite simply life changing.
I loved being able to study one subject in its entirety in so much depth. I did initially find the self-study hard and that is something you have to get used to but the ability to set my own time to study and learn outside of lectures meant I could be involved in a wide range of sports clubs, societies and volunteering projects which helped me develop different skills alongside my course, as well as making lifelong friends!
When researching university I think it’s important to make sure there are activities outside your course that you can get involved in. These could be related or something totally different! But it’s important to know that there are spaces where you can meet like-minded people over similar interests or hobbies, or even a desire to try something totally new!
Rosie’s Career
I am the Student Engagement Manager at The University of Northampton Students’ Union.
I was heavily involved in volunteering when at school helping teach and read in local primary schools and as a brownie leader, amongst other things. When at University I realised I could continue to volunteer in the local community and volunteered hundreds of hours locally and internationally whilst at Loughborough.
Through my love of volunteering and roles I undertook whilst a student I got a job organising volunteer opportunities for students at Birmingham University.
After a few years, I moved onto my current role managing my own team, responsible for sports, societies and volunteering at the University of Northampton.
