Studying Geography
Congratulations on your offer to study Geography at Loughborough University. Find out more about what to expect from your studies once you get started.
Forest Research Trip
In the first year of the degree programme, students participate in a fieldcourse in the UK as part of their introduction to field-based research methods in both human and physical geography.
The short video below captures some recent small-group teaching activities in our Research Forest on campus and a local stream, developing key skills in forest and river ecology.
Namibia
Our third year geography students visited Namibia to explore the Namib Desert as part of the Dryland Environments Fieldcourse module. This trip gave our students an understanding of the geomorphology, biogeography and climatology of dryland environments. Furthermore, students gained practical experience in a range of field and laboratory techniques including process monitoring, geomorphological mapping, sedimentology and climate data analysis.
Peak District
Our first-year geography students have recently been on a field-trip to the Peak District where they completed activities in both human and physical geography. In human geography, our students were exploring ideas of Buxton and Matlock’s ‘sense of place’, creating mental maps and experimenting with a range of innovative methods to explore the local environment. The trip also included elements of physical geography with students heading up to Thorpe Cloud for a surveying exercise.
