From percussionist to physicist

Engineering Physics student Joshua has been playing percussion since the age of eight, continuing with his music at Loughborough University and receiving a Loughborough Music Scholarship to further support and develop his talents.

Joshua has been a member of numerous ensembles, from school and local bands to national ensembles, including the National Youth Brass Band of Wales. Whilst at Loughborough he has joined both Tuxedo Swing and LSU (Loughborough Students’ Union) Classical, playing both the drum kit and general percussion with both ensembles throughout his time here.

Why Loughborough?

When looking at universities and courses in school, I was stuck between physics and engineering, and so Loughborough seemed the perfect choice. With the significant interaction and cooperation between departments, Loughborough offers students an insight into all areas of physics and engineering with the freedom to choose what you study in the course.

I have really loved the learning environment and sense of community that is present all around the University, whether that’s the academic departments, halls of residence or societies - there is a real sense of belonging. You also have everything you need so close to each other and on one campus. Loughborough is a fantastic place to study with high quality facilities, excellent teaching staff and a sense of community that allows friendships to blossom and students to make the most of their time here.

Arts ambassador

It was an amazing feeling knowing that I was chosen as an ambassador of the arts at Loughborough. I was in my first year when I was awarded the scholarship and it introduced me to other likeminded people and has allowed me in later years to directly contribute to music around campus and Loughborough town.

A thriving music scene

I have mainly been involved in Tuxedo Swing, the University big band who perform all around Loughborough and the UK, and LSU Classical, the orchestra and wind band who put on numerous events each year playing a wide variety of classical and modern music. From being in these groups, I have also been involved with other societies such as Stage Society in their annual theatrical productions, LSU Sing in their collaborations, and MUSOC (Music Society) in the regular events they organise. All of these societies contribute to both the campus and wider local area’s music scene very heavily.

Music and much more!

As well as music, I have had the opportunity to try out new sports and get involved at any level from complete beginner up to seasoned pro. I was awarded the Physics department Volunteering Award in 2018-19 for my contribution to the department through getting involved in department sports and social events. I was also the Musical Director of Tuxedo Swing for 2021-22 where we had an amazing year following COVID-19 by bringing live music back to Loughborough and a successful charity tour to Edinburgh over Easter.
