Statistics in global pandemic research

Be part of ground-breaking research projects that address global issues. Start making a difference - this Mathematics student did just that.

Our maths students gain a solid grounding in the fundamentals of the subject whilst also having the flexibility to explore other areas such as statistics and finance. Opportunities to get involved in cutting-edge research as part of the degree will allow you to reach your full potential.

Making an impact

At Loughborough University students have the chance to study a subject they are passionate about, and as this case study demonstrates, take part in ground-breaking and potentially life-saving research alongside their degree.

Mathematics with Statistics student, Khubayb Mohammad, did just that. For his final year project Khubayb supported Dr Diwei Zhou, senior statistics lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, on her research project which was focussing on a current, global issue.

The research involved estimating the severity of Covid-19 and comparing how the severity has changed over time. With Italy being the first country in the Western Hemisphere to have a major outbreak and remaining a high-risk country, I chose to investigate the severity there. During the research, I developed multiple programmes using a statistical computing program called R Studio to create models which estimated the true number of cases, the future number of cases and transmissibility ratio. The findings from these programmes were than analysed in a report.

With my research being based on Covid-19, something that has affected us all globally over the past year, it has been a privilege to be able to work on research that is so current. It has also allowed me to understand Covid-19 and its severity statistically.

Rewarding degree programmes

At Loughborough, we provide the tools you need to reach your full potential. Employers are continually impressed by the energy and enthusiam our graduates demonstrate, making them highly sought after. We are committed to providing students with every opportunity to go above and beyond, with access to the state-of-the-art facilities, optional modules to tailor your degree to your interests and the chance to get hands-on experience with projects and industrial placements.

While studying Mathematics and Statistics, I have been offered the opportunity to study a wide variety of modules such as Medical Statistics and Mathematical Biology which have allowed me to gain insight into the different applications of Mathematics and Statistics. Furthermore, I was able to spend a year in Industry which helped me to develop my professional skills within a pharmaceutical company.

The reason I chose to study Mathematics at Loughborough University was due to its impressive reputation and graduate prospects. As well as this, Loughborough offers you the opportunity to learn from experts within the field of Mathematics which allows you gain both an insight into current research and break throughs being made.
