Our placement scheme comes highly recommended, providing the option on all our undergraduate courses of spending a year in industry gaining invaluable professional experience, growing your contacts as well as your skill set.

Assisted by a dedicated placement tutor and the University's Career Network, our students find placements with major IT and business sector companies such as IBM, Intel and Accenture. A placement is a terrific opportunity to "test drive" a career and our students are sometimes offered employment with their placement organisation after they graduate.

Facilities

We can offer you an excellent learning environment in which to study and work, including computer laboratories with 24-hour access for the exclusive use of our students, specialist lab facilities for student project work on robotics, networking, HCI and imaging technology, and support from our team of systems specialists.

Accreditation

Several of our BSc courses are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), which qualifies graduates for Chartered IT Professional registration (CIPT), while our Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB) degree is accredited by Tech Partnership Degrees. In addition, several of our MSci courses have been granted accreditation towards the educational requirement for Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Scientist (CSci) registration. We continually monitor the content of our computer science courses for quality and make improvements based on feedback from students, senior industrialists, and accrediting bodies such as the British Computer Society and Tech Partnership Degrees.

Major companies are directly involved in sponsoring our modules, supporting project work, and providing insightful guest lectures and a series of prizes throughout the degree courses.

Career opportunities

To study computer science is to skill yourself for the future and our graduates regularly go on to enjoy fulfilling careers with major national and international companies like Microsoft, Siemens, Dyson and Sky, as well as in SMEs, local government, education and research.

The most recent Graduate Outcomes data (2021-22 survey, published 2024) shows a median annual salary of £35,000 for UK-domiciled graduates from Computer Science.

One year on placement
All our courses offer the opportunity to spend a year working in industry, giving you the chance to gain valuable skills sought after by employers. A placement year, which can be spent at up to three organisations, allows you to gain first-hand experience of a real role with real responsibilities. A year in industry will equip you with key knowledge and practical skills to give you a competitive advantage in your search for graduate employment.
