Dr Simone Guareschi

  • Visiting Fellow in River Science

Simone is a freshwater ecologist with international experience in both environmental consulting (Spain) and the academic sector (Italy, Spain, UK: Royal Society Newton International Fellow). His research is at the interface of applied ecology, biological invasions, and the monitoring and conservation of freshwater ecosystems. His experience is mostly focussed on stream invertebrates as indicators of ecosystem functioning, ecological status and the wider conservation management of aquatic ecosystems. His recent work explores the multiple implications of biological invasions on multiple aspects and different contexts (e.g., river biomonitoring, global change biology, distribution models) in collaborations with researchers from Geography and Environment (Loughborough University).

He regularly serves as a referee for leading journals in the aquatic sciences and ecology and has experience as a chairperson in scientific conferences. He was a member of the panel of experts of the LIFE project INVASAQUA: Aquatic Invasive Alien Species of Freshwater and Estuarine Systems: Awareness and Prevention in the Iberian Peninsula.

He worked as Royal Society Newton International Fellow (2019-2021) at Loughborough University with the project 'The effects of biological invasions on the ecological integrity of rivers and biomonitoring indices: identifying challenges and predicting the consequences' in collaboration with the Environment Agency. Similarly, he was awarded a Newton Alumni grant (2021-2023) with the project “Biological invasions in a changing world: reconceptualizing frameworks for a multidisciplinary audience” funded by Royal Society.

He is currently Researcher at University of Turin (Torino-Italia), member of ALPSTREAM - Alpine Stream Research Center and Visiting Fellow in River Science at Loughborough University (UK).
