Dr Michael Banks’ (Physics BSc, 2004) popular-science book, Physics Around the Clock was published in the US and North America on 7 April 2026 after two successful print runs in the UK in September 2025 and January 2026.

Physics Around the Clock is all about the interesting science you come across on a "typical day", whether that is making a coffee, taking the dog out for a walk or when pottering around in the garden.

“With this book I really wanted to get across that physics isn’t just an abstract subject about subatomic particles or mind-boggling equations but is something that is all around us and relevant to everything we do day in, day out,” says Michael. “I also use the science to offer tips and tricks including how to cook perfect pasta, pour the ideal glass of champagne or give you the best chance to win at Monopoly, so hopefully it has something for everyone, and it was certainly a lot of fun to write.”

The book has been praised for its accessible and engaging approach, with James Kakalios, Professor of Physics at the University of Minnesota and author of The Physics of Everyday Things, describing it as explaining “in an easy and engaging way, how from morning till night, we’re surrounded by fascinating physics that hides in plain sight.”

Physics Around the Clock is Michael’s second successful book on physics, with his first book, The Secret Science of Baby, published in 2022. The Secret Science of Baby examined conception, pregnancy and babyhood through the lens of physics and how such an approach can lead not only to new treatments and understanding but a greater appreciation of the mechanisms that life has put in place to propagate itself.

Michael now works in Bristol as news editor of Physics World magazine, the international monthly publication from the Institute of Physics in the UK. Michael will also be publishing a traditional and simplified Chinese version of Physics Around the Clock coming later in the year by Globe Pequot, extending its reach to a global audience.
