Alum Emily Ann Davison (Psychology BSc, 2003; Finance and Management MSc, 2004) has published her latest children's picture book, BEAST MEETS STICK.

Following her studies at Loughborough, Emily trained as an Early Years Teacher before moving into children's publishing in 2019. BEAST MEETS STICK is her fourth picture book and features illustrations by acclaimed artist and author Marion Deuchars.

The story follows Beast, who has grown tired of life in his sludgy, slimy swamp. Everything changes when he stumbles across a mysterious knobbly object – a stick.

Suddenly, Beast's world is transformed. Armed with his new discovery, he spends his days making patterns in slime, creating music, casting spells and even imagining he can fly. But while a stick can unlock endless adventures, there are some things it simply can't do.

Bursting with humour, colour and imagination, BEAST MEETS STICK celebrates the joy of creative play and the power of making your own fun.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the book, Emily said:

"I have fond memories of studying Psychology at Loughborough University and was always interested in child development. I went on to train as an Early Years Teacher, and promoting imagination and play for children (and beasts!) has always been important to me. BEAST MEETS STICK does just this! It explores creativity and imagination and is the ideal picture book for little ones who love playing with sticks!"

BEAST MEETS STICK was published by Hachette on 2 July 2026.
