Dr Gwendolyn Windpassinger (Politics, History and International Relations PhD, 2012) has published her new book ‘It’s Not About the Screens – A Different View on Parenting in a Digital World’.

Following her doctorate at Loughborough University, Gwendolyn taught at universities in France and Germany. She has since built a career in media education in Germany, working closely with families, schools, and educational organisations to support children’s development in an increasingly digital society.

Her new book offers a refreshing perspective for parents navigating the challenges of raising children in a screen-filled world. Rather than focusing on strict rules or idealised strategies, ‘It’s Not About the Screens’ encourages an approach centred on connection, presence, and the value of everyday interactions. At its core, the book argues that media education is not primarily about regulating screen time or enforcing control, but about nurturing strong, trusting relationships.

Reflecting on her time at Loughborough, Gwendolyn said:

"My time at Loughborough taught me to look beyond simple answers and ask deeper questions. That perspective still shapes my work today – whether I am supporting families, advising schools, or writing about how we can raise children with confidence in a digital world."

It’s Not About the Screens was published on 1 June and can be purchased online.
